Ground Resistance Testing

Grounding issues create many of today’s Power Quality problems.  Grounding system testing is as important as any other maintenance procedure.  NRG, Inc. has the capability of testing, troubleshooting and designing grounding systems.  This ranges from internal facility studies to ground grid designs.

The Following are Typical Grounding Measurements that NRG Can Perform:

  • Power Quality Grounding Problems:  A major part of power quality problems are associated with improper grounding techniques.  NRG performs site studies in which the grounding practices of panels and transformers are checked.  The improper bonding of panels or equipment can cause serious power quality problems, which can be solved with minor electrical revisions.

  • Grounding Electrode Resistance:  Ground rods have several purposes.  They are used to discharge lightning strikes, protect personnel from faults in the electrical power system, and for a reference potential for instrument references and safety.  It is also essential to meet NEC, OSHA and other electrical safety standards.  NRG can perform resistance testing of ground electrodes to assure the levels are within appropriate standards.

  • Ground Grid Design / Soil Resistivity:  NRG can perform soil resistivity tests, which are essential when designing a grounding grid.  This test will also determine the best location for driving ground rods, as soil resistivity is the key factor in determining what the resistance of the ground rod(s) will be.

  • Earth Resistance Measurement on High-Voltage Pylons:  The measurement of the earth resistance of a single Pylon usually requires the overhead earth wire to be disengaged or the separation of the earthing system from the pylon.  NRG has equipment in which this can be performed without disturbing the existing system.
